Gated Communities – Fighting COVID-19 on the front foot!

The Health Ministry has issued guidelines for gated residential complexes with an eye to keep a check on the spread of the pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live our lives. Owing to the virus being severely infectious, we have to now strictly adhere to some basic health-related rules and a high level of hygiene. These do not apply only to our workplace or when we step out; they even include the residential complexes we reside in. In fact, the Union Health Ministry has released specific guidelines for gated residential complexes, for their own welfare and safety. Some of them are as follows:

  • Every gated community has been advised to provide hand sanitizers and ensure thermal screening of staff and visitors at their entry points.
  • Vendors, household helps and car cleaners should also be subject to the screening mentioned above.
  • Wearing a mask is compulsory for anyone, even the residents, within the building premises.
  • Only asymptomatic individuals should be allowed to enter, to ensure the safety of one and all.
  • It is mandatory to follow respiratory etiquette since droplets are proved to be the most contagious in the rampant spread of this disease. This involves strict practice of covering one’s mouth and nose during coughing or sneezing into a handkerchief, tissue or flexed elbow.
  • Physical distancing of at least six feet must be maintained in all common areas, including parks, corridors, lift lobbies, gymnasiums, clubs etc. In fact, most residential complexes have barred the entry of more than two people inside elevators at a time, unless they represent the same family.
  • It is advised to keep contact with guests or visitors to the bare minimum till the uncontrolled spread of the virus is contained or stalled.
  • All residents are being encouraged to wash their hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Posters, standees and AV media on preventive measures must be displayed prominently outside as well as inside the gated complex.
  • The government-issued guidelines add that individuals above the age of 65 years, pregnant or lactating women, children under the age of 10 and those with comorbidities are advised to mostly be home-bound, since they are more susceptible to contracting the virus.
  • If feeling unwell, the residents are encouraged to self-report symptoms and facilitate their testing, isolation and quarantine if necessary.
  • Counselling, guidance and support to affected patients will be provided by the designated government bodies. Special attention will be provided to households that have no family members to take care of the dependents.
